THINGS TO
CONSIDER BEFORE ADOPTING A PET
Will you be
able to spend time with your pet? Dogs especially are social creatures
and need human interaction. They will not be happy left out in the yard
alone or in a crate all the time. Do you have the space for a pet? The
smaller the available space the more you will have to plan to make sure
your pet gets enough exercise and stimulation. Do you have time to train
your pet? Training is vital to making your dog, especially, fit into
your family routine.
Remember there is a person responsible for every animal at the shelter. It was not the dog’s or cat’s choice to be there so keep this in mind when you adopt. If you get a pet “for your child” you are still responsible for that dog or cat. These animals are not something to be discarded when you or your children tire of them. If you can no longer care for your animal please make every effort to find it a new home before you bring it to a shelter where it may have to be euthanized if the shelter is full.
Whatever
animal you choose, make it a long-term commitment. Your new pet will
need attention, love and re-spect from you – food and water are not
enough. Consider your pet to be part of your family as that is how they
will think of you.
